Siemens orchestrates the clouds

Bespoke options for customers to be enhanced with VMware vCloud partnership

Siemens IT Solutions and Services has signed a global virtualisation deal to become a VMware vCloudTM service provider partner. This will complement the options available to its customers via Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) environments from the VMware vSphereTM platform.

Public, Private and Community Cloud concepts are key to the emerging cloud strategy offered by Siemens. In addition, the Hybrid Cloud offers a heightened level of collaboration and security by bringing together on and off-premises scenarios. The VMware vCloud partnership further scales the technologies and applications available to evolve the tailor made options for organisations looking to integrate public and private enterprise-ready clouds on an adaptable pay-as-you-go basis.

Customers will benefit from the flexibility to scale services upwards or downwards quickly and easily, with a utility billing model that allows the use of services without long-term contractual commitments or prior investments - customers simply pay according to utilisation. This approach provides an ideal compromise between the Public Cloud and in-house IT operations without the loss of security or additional administration expenditure to close security gaps.

"We are pleased that Siemens has chosen the VMware platform for delivering secure and reliable enterprise cloud service," said Dan Chu, Vice President, Cloud Infrastructure and Services at VMware. "We look forward to working together to further the vision of the VMware vCloud initiative, enabling customers to leverage public cloud services that are compatible with their private VMware environments."

"With the support of leading-edge technologies and solutions from VMware, we have strengthened our position to orchestrate the cloud environment and provide innovative solutions and services beyond the constraints that are often part of a more traditional IT service delivery model," said John Hall, Head of Strategy and Portfolio, North West Europe at Siemens IT Solutions and Services. "This is in line with the strategy of Siemens IT Solutions and Services, which aims to provide premium, sustainable solutions in all areas - system integration, outsourcing and cloud offerings."

"VMware's technology is enabling organisations to completely transform the way they work," commented Mark Newton, Regional Director for UK and Ireland, VMware. "The partners in the VMware vCloudTM service provider programme are exploiting our solutions to drive some incredibly innovative projects, deploying VMware's virtualised infrastructure to create hybrid clouds that increase IT agility, while leveraging existing investments and preserving choice."

Siemens has been working with VMware since 2009, using its technology as a platform for in-house and external data centres and desktop virtualisation solutions. Common solutions are also being developed within the framework of this agreement such as the ‘Managed Server on Demand', and the innovative User-Owned-Device ‘virtual desktop' offering available as standard products.
